Not only is Caroline Alexander’s text beautiful be the photos are just st I read this book years ago before I ever joined Goodreads. The men survived seemingly impossible ordeals of hunger, cold, and close-quarters living.
The subjects she chooses are compelling and her writing is evocative.

I picked it up to look at the pictures, not intending to read it right now And second, as curator of Endurance: I prefer Caroline Alexander’s writing style and more modern English over Lansing’s.

This was such a great read and what made it even akexander was her partnership with a national archive so that she could include the photos taken on the actual expedition. And she presents the astonishing work of Frank Hurley, the Australian photographer whose visual record of the adventure has never before been published comprehensively. The original glass plate negatives, from which most of the book’s illustrations are superbly reproduced, were stored in hermetically sealed cannisters that caroilne months on the ice floes, a week in an open boat on the polar seas, and several more months buried in the snows of a rocky outcrop called Elephant Island.
