Edward Gorey’s mordant masterpiece The Wuggly Ump charts the fate of three wholesome children whose happy days weaving chains of flowers are cut short. “Sing tirraloo, sing tirralay, The Wuggly Ump lives far away.” That is one of my favorite beginnings to an Edward Gorey book. My first and favorite Edward Gorey book. This book was printed on very inexpensive acidic paper and gorwy quite fragile now. This is a spot where I post photos and personal observations on pieces from my Edward Gorey collection. A breezy sunshiny bit of sing-song morbidity. We were all rolling with laughter at the end. I’m not entirley sure what the moral of this story is but I think it’s that if you’re a kid who behaves, eats all your dinner and say your prayers before bedtime a hideous monster will arrive at your front door and eat you.


This gives the book a paint by number feel that is appropriate to the story, with the colored areas being flat solid tones which infill elements of the drawings.

This follows a group of happy little children, gorej they weave chains of flowers and eat their bread and milk.

Goreyana: The Wuggly Ump

This book is printed in three colors like The Bug Bookbut the colors were added at the printing stage and not on the original artwork. One of his step-mothers was Corinna Mura, a cabaret singer who had a brief role in the classic film Casablanca. In um; years he illustrated many children’s books by John Bellairs, as well as books in several series begun by Edwardd and continued by other authors after his death.


This was actually a story in color.

Only Edward Gorey knew for sure, but this is the only book that this rare creature appears in. It’s more of a true version of The wufgly little pigs that every kid should read.
